Social Media and Broadcast
Social media and similar technology have evolved in a rapid pace in recent years. Nowadays, it would not be uncommon to see these social platforms share their influences onto other forms of media, particularly television broadcasting. Becoming relevant as early as 2010’s, online users can now access a wide variety of television shows through the use of social media. Unlike traditional TV-watching, by integrating these shows into these popular platforms, users are able to communicate and with each other through comments, all in real time. Furthermore, movie stars and celebrities are also given the chance to interact with their fans remotely, thus increasing their fan-base and expand their influences drastically.
Even though I seldom use social media, it is still quite apparent for me to recognize the significant impact that it has over traditional broadcasting. Social media amasses a much larger audiences, and hence, it is much easier for news and agenda to spread far and wide. Influencers and new actors, who are interested in increasing their reputation can also use these platforms as an effective catalyst to advance their career. Surrounding by massive online followers, these influencers, most have not even been on television or newspaper, can share their experiences, opinions, and wisdom for all to see. While obviously not everything that these influencers share can be counted as trustworthy or relevant, but few are bothered enough to point that out. I happen to be one of those small minority who do not take these wisdom seriously, I do not communicate nor interact with these influencers. Most of what I know about them either came from my friends, or a news outlet.
With over 45% of the world’s population using social media on a regular basis, it is not uncommon to see a large portion of them look up to influencers, either as their idols or for guidance in a particular topic. These people have worked diligently to earn their status. They are either very talented in multitude of ways, or just generally have a lot of knowledge and expertise on a specific subject. It is for this same reason that brands and franchises tend to recruit these influencers to promote their services or product. Because nobody likes to watch an advertisement disrupting their favorite TV show but will happily sit through that same advertisement if it was presented by their favorite influencer.

Hey Phuc,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement on how social media can help celebrities and other influencers a better opportunity to interact with their fans. I also agree with your take on how social media is much bigger than traditional broadcasting. Social media has way too many users and it much easier and more convenient to use.
Hey Phuc,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you that the reach of social media is huge compared to other broadcasting sites. And I also agree with you that it is easy for you to take a liking to different influencers. But, always take what they're posting with.a grain of salt because you never know if they're telling the full truth.
Hello Phuc!
ReplyDeleteYour last sentence really struck a chord with me because it reminded me of all the times I have sat through a trailer that I would normally skip or ignore simply because it was posted on TikTok.
Hey Phuc,
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty sad to see social networks that are often designed to be widely accessible in order to attract large populations, but still manage to segregate certain communities of level of education and other affluent factors of addiction within society. Great post!
