The technological aspects surrounding internet has been evolving at a rapid pace since its first mainstream introduction in the 90’s. Back then, the platform was still in its infancy and was limited in both size and features. The selected few who were able to gain access to the internet could only shuffle around a handful of activities such as reading local news, sending messages or looking at poor resolution pictures. Fast forward a couple of decades later, internet has quickly transformed and solidified itself as not only a tool for personal entertainment purposes, but also an indispensable asset for companies and large corporations to expand their influences on the masses.

Social media and mobile technology are the two key facets of modern internet that present the most potential for improving a wide range of business models. There also are critical economic and social perspectives that connect technological innovation to broad trends of a global workforce (Lipschultz, 2017), particularly with younger generation of employees. The widespread use of social media has also helped boosting revenue for both small and large entrepreneurs who employ the platform as a business model. It is however a complex endeavor that places heavy focus on user expectation as the core objective. This requires not only the constant monitoring of customers’ interest, but also continuous innovation to keep up with the modern trends and generate revenue (Lipschultz, 2017).

This rapid push of technological advancement in social media has created some concerns among several users of the platform, me included. While I do think that it is beneficial that modern businesses have found a better way to connect with their potential customers. It, however, did create some worries about users’ privacy as a whole. With the constant practice of monitoring and collecting information, sometimes even without consents. I fear that one day my personal, non-business-related data could be obtained, either by accident or deliberately and change hands all around the internet. This becomes an even bigger issue for my future career in healthcare, which places a heavy emphasis on users’ privacy and the safeguard of sensitive information. If I perchance leak a patient’s information, even if unintentionally, it would not only cost me my job, but also potentially put the clinic under millions of dollars of lawsuit and compensations. Which is scary to think about.
