Assignment 3: Time Diary

 Time Diary

Even though I am no longer a frequent social media user, I do find myself being fascinated at Tiktok as an occasional entertainment outlet. Even though I do not have a Tiktok account, I do browse, watch, and enjoy all the contents that the app can offer. In my opinion, it is a very interesting, break-through platform that allows users to express themselves in any sort of topics by using small video clips that can either be informative, educational, or most of the time, hilarious. I myself love these comedic short clips about TV shows and mainstream music. Where users make clips of themselves singing, dancing, and sometimes poking fun at recent popular TV shows for their bad writing and cliché approach.

I browse Tiktok occasionally, averaging around 30 minutes to 1 hour a day depending on the workload or homework that I have for that day. I would not call my activity as a recurring habit as I sometimes go for as long as two weeks without watching any Tiktok videos. To me the platform serves nothing more than just another form of entertainment. I documented my own usage rate for the app from 2/10 to 2/14 to better understand how much influences that it has over my regular schedule, using a tracker that is built into my iPad. The tracker showed that I did not use the app on the first day, but the next three days show my usage time averaging around 27 minutes per day. I spent most of the time looking at various video clips, and the rest is for reading comments and checking out new creators. Since I do not have an account for my own, I was not able to provide my own commentaries. Regardless, it was still interesting to see and read other people’s opinions on various subjects and videos.

Since I do not comment nor provide any posts of my own, I treat Tiktok not as a social media platform, but more like a collection of short TV shows that I can watch for free. I do not devote myself to much into it as I still have other hobbies that I reckon to be more interesting. In period where free time is almost non-existence, such as during testing seasons and finals, I could see myself having less and less time for browsing on Tiktok, or even dropping it entirely. But even then, it is still not much of an issue as I believe it is important to prioritize my career and degree over that of a single entertainment app.
